Physicans Assistant

During her 41-year career in medicine, Joyce Goodman, P.A.-C., has used her nursing skills in the emergency room, the intensive care unit, and in flight nursing. Over time she realized the critical illnesses her patients faced often resulted from unchecked progression of their chronic health problems. She decided to switch to working in primary care medicine, teaching patients how to avoid the serious complications of chronic diseases by emphasizing prevention and better daily management.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Ms. Goodman first became interested in medicine as a high school freshman. She remembers reading Dr. Tom Dooley's books about his experiences providing medical care in Southeast Asia. She realized that she wanted to help other people in a similar way, and went on to graduate from St. Vincent's Hospital Nursing School in 1968. Once her children were older, she returned to school and received her B.S. in Nursing from Graceland College in Iowa in 1996, then completed her Physician Assistant coursework at University of North Dakota in 1998. After twenty-five years in other parts of the country, she returned to Jacksonville in 2001 to join Family Care Center of Arlington's medical staff.

Ms. Goodman's interests outside of medicine include traveling, gardening, cooking, reading, and spending time with her husband and her grandchildren. She volunteers through her church, Mission House clinic and with the AHA. She is retired from the Army Reserve since 2007 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Her goal in Family Medicine is to treat the whole person, physically and emotionally, practicing in partnership with her patients to help them live longer with a good quality of life.
